AMS Undergraduate Student Travel Grants to the JMM


The American Mathematical Society (AMS) is pleased to offer grants for partial travel support to the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) in Seattle, WA, January 8 - 11, 2025, for a limited number of undergraduate students who are presenting in the following JMM sessions: 

Applications are especially encouraged from students from groups that have been underrepresented in the mathematical sciences and from those with no other support. Awards will be made to support travel, lodging, and subsistence and are not to exceed US$1,200. No student shall receive this grant more than once. 

In the past, the AMS and Pi Mu Epsilon (PME) shared an application. As of this year, this application is only for the AMS Undergraduate Student Travel Grants to the JMM. If you are looking to apply to the PME online application, information can be found here.

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration for an AMS Undergraduate Student Travel Grant, applicants must
  • Submit an abstract for an AMS-MAA-SIAM Special Session on Research in Mathematics by Undergraduates and Students in Post-Baccalaureate Programs; a PME Contributed Session; or another Special or Contributed Session at JMM through the AMS abstract submission portal no later than Tuesday, September 10, 2024, or 
  • Submit an abstract for a PME poster session through the AMS abstract submission portal no later than Tuesday, September 24, 2024;
  • Complete the application for the travel grant, including abstract number, no later than Thursday, October 17, 2024 (11:59 p.m. ET);
  • Have a home address and an institutional mailing address which are outside a 50-mile radius of the Seattle Convention Center in Seattle, WA; and
  • Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate in a U.S. institution.
Please note: Travel grant applicants must submit their abstract and obtain an abstract number prior to applying for a travel grant. One application should then be made by each individual who is requesting support, whether they are in a group project or a one-person project. Every co-presenter must submit their own travel grant application.  

Travel Support

Travel grant recipients will be responsible for making their own travel and meeting arrangements in accordance with grant policies and procedures. Grantees who do not follow these policies and procedures may not be eligible for reimbursement of travel expenses they incur. Award amounts are anticipated to be up to $1,200 to defray travel, housing, and subsistence expenses. AMS grants are funded in part by the National Science Foundation (NSF). To accept an award, a grantee will be asked to acknowledge NSF support. More guidance on the NSF acknowledgement can be found here.
