Program Description:

AMS Graduate Student Travel Grants to the JMM

With funding from the AMS Next Generation Fund, the American Mathematical Society (AMS) is pleased to offer grants for partial travel support for graduate students to attend the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) in Seattle, WA, January 8 - 11, 2025. Applications are especially encouraged from students from groups that have been underrepresented in the mathematical sciences and from those with no other support. Priority is given to students in their last two years of study who are presenting and those who expect to engage in professional development, networking, or job seeking while at the 2025 JMM. Awards will be made to support travel, lodging, subsistence, and registration and are not to exceed US$1,430. No student shall receive this grant more than once.

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration for an AMS Graduate Student Travel Grant to the JMM, applicants must:
  • Be doctoral students in mathematics in their last two years of study or have earned the PhD between August 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024;
  • Reside and study/work in the United States;
  • Have a home address that is outside a 50-mile radius of the Seattle Convention Center in Seattle, WA;
  • Have an institution mailing address that is outside a 50-mile radius of the Seattle Convention Center in Seattle, WA.
In the application, applicants should provide evidence that their participation in the JMM will advance their research agenda. They should also show that support from this grant would be key to their traveling to the JMM site, such as if they do not have other substantial support that could be used instead. Applicants may also provide an explanation for special circumstances surrounding their application.

Travel Support

Travel grant applicants will be responsible for making their own travel and meeting arrangements in accordance with grant policies and procedures. Grantees who do not follow these policies and procedures may not be eligible for reimbursement of travel expenses they incur. Award amounts are anticipated to be up to $1,430 to defray travel, housing, subsistence, and registration expenses.
