program Description
Pro Mathematica Arte (PMA), which oversees the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics (BSM) program, will sponsor a 6-week Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Summer 2026. PMA and BSM aim to offer research experiences to qualified mathematics majors, in service of their organizational missions of promoting the study of the mathematical sciences through educational exchange and cooperation. The 2026 BSM summer research program will run from June 22, 2026 through July 31, 2026, hosted by Haverford College. Haverford College is a leading liberal arts college located 9 miles from the center of Philadelphia. The diverse neighborhoods comprising the greater Philadelphia area are home to many cultural icons and recreational spaces, with direct public transportation access from Haverford’s campus. The 2026 BSM REU at Haverford College is designed to overlap with the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia from July 23-30, 2026. The BSM REU will provide undergraduate students with an engaging collaborative research experience on the two topics of area relations associated with dissections of polygons, and knot theory in four-dimensional space. See https://sites.google.com/budapestsemesters.com/bsm-haverford-reu-summer2026 for more details on the research projects and faculty mentors. The 6-week stipend is $4,760 with free on-campus apartment housing and weekday lunches, as well as travel reimbursement up to $400. Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to be eligible for funding. Applications should be submitted online through MathPrograms.org at https://www.mathprograms.org/db/programs/1865. Applications should include a cover letter (1-2 pages) ranking the two projects in order of preference, explaining your mathematical interests, outlining your career goals, and articulating any experience that especially qualifies you for participation; a curriculum vitae; an unofficial transcript; and two confidential letters of reference.
