Program Description:   URMs

The Central Convergence Research Experiences for Undergraduates (CC-REU) is a summer program funded by the National Science Foundation (DMS-2050692) with research across a range of mathematical topics including number theory, analysis, probability, and statistics. This year our project theme concerns conditions on divergence series that lead to convergence, and numerical techniques to determine the values of such sums. Interlaced with the mathematical research projects are professional development training and seminars by guest mathematicians. Students will give presentations at the end of the REU and produce a written report suitable for publication.

The program is a full-time six-week summer research program, running June 24 – August 2, 2024. Students will also be eligible for travel funding to present their results at regional or national mathematics conferences after the summer program.

Eligibility: The NSF requires every REU participant to be a US citizen or permanent resident. In addition, all participants must return to their undergraduate institution after the REU and be full-time undergraduate students in Fall 2024. We especially encourage students from groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM and early career students (students with two or three years remaining of their degree) to apply.

Participant support: Undergraduates accepted for this research experience will be eligible for a $3600 stipend, additional weekly substance support, and funds to support travel to national research conferences in 2024-2025.

Participant Expectations: CC-REU is a full-time summer research program. Student participants are expected to commit at least 40 hours every week the program is in session and, as such, should not commit to other activities (such as taking courses or having part-time jobs) during the REU program.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis with a final deadline of April 15th. Please submit your CV, transcripts, and a cover letter, along with two reference letters. Your cover letter must address the following questions: - Tell us a little bit about yourself. Briefly explain your background in mathematics and any experience you have in research or problem-solving. (At least 1-2 paragraphs) - Describe an enjoyable experience that you've had in doing mathematics. (At least 1-2 paragraphs) - Describe a personal example that shows your persistence and commitment to academic endeavors. In your description describe how you overcame the challenge or obstacle. (At least 1-2 paragraphs) - Describe your personal approach to working in a group. How do you work to include everyone? How do you identity a time to approach problem on your own? (At least 1-2 paragraphs)

The 2024 faculty mentors are Dr. Sooie-Hoe Loke and Dr. Dominic Klyve. If you have any questions regarding the CC-REU program at CWU, please contact us at sooiehoe.loke@cwu.edu.
