The REU Geometry and Topology in a Discrete Setting will be held May 30, 2023 − July 7, 2023 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. See the link below for completed research projects from previous iterations to get a sense of possible research topics. Participants will learn geometric and topological methods and how to apply them to research problems within geometry as well as further afield. Prior knowledge of geometry and topology is not strictly required. Students will conduct their research under close guidance of faculty mentor Florian Frick.
The program will be integrated into the Mellon College of Science Summer Scholars Program. The program features a series of math talks, workshops about graduate school applications, social activities, etc.
This REU is NSF-funded. US citizens and permanent residents who expect to finish their undergraduate degree after the summer of 2023 are eligible to receive a stipend of $630 per week ($3,780 for the 6-week period) as well as fully paid on-campus housing. Domestic travel to and from the REU site will be reimbursed. Additional funding may become available. Students from 4-year colleges and students from historically underrepresented backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply. Application Materials: - current transcripts (unofficial transcripts are sufficient) - personal statement of at most 1-2 pages - a brief Curriculum Vitae - two letters of recommendation
