*** this program has been closed, and no new applications will be accepted. ***

The department of Mathematical Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications to our graduate program in Mathematics.

To be admitted to this program applicants must document competence equivalent to graduation from a recognized U.S. four-year college, university or institute of technology.

All application materials should be received in the Department by January 15, 2017 to be assured priority consideration. If we receive applications before this date applicants will be eligible for an early interview decision.

There is no application fee. However, before a decision can be made regarding admission the following materials are required as part of your application:

  • Official Transcripts. A transcript from all college-level institutions you attended, whether or not you received a degree there. Official copies should be mailed to our department at the address below.
  • Reference letters. You must submit contact information for at least three professional references who are willing to write you a letter of recommendation. At least one of these references should be from the college you most recently attended. Your reference writers will be asked to submit their letter to us directly through this website (or by postal mail if absolutely necessary).
  • Official GRE scores. You must submit an official report of your Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) results. We require an official report for both the GRE general test and the GRE subject test. (The institution Code for the GRE is 2074. Any one of these department codes can be used for GRE: 0702 Appl Math, 0703 Math, or 0799 Other Math Sciences.)
Please be sure you take the tests early enough to ensure that the scores reach us by January. Applicants should inquire about test dates, testing center locations and availability well in advance of the deadline, as places in these centers tend to fill up quickly. Information on these examinations is available from the Graduate Record Examinations website.
  • Official TOEFL scores. You must submit an official report of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if your native language is not English. Students who received their entire undergraduate education in the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom do not need to submit a TOEFL score. Information about this exam can be obtained from the TOEFL website. (Institution Code for TOEFL 2074. Department TOEFL code is 72 Math or 54 Applied Math.)
  • Statement of Purpose. Your statement of purpose should describe your mathematical background, previous research experience and your primary areas of interest for your future work. Typical statements of purpose are about one or two pages long.

Additionally, it would be helpful if you uploaded copies of the following as part of your application on this website:

  • Current curriculum vitae.
  • Scanned copies of your official transcripts.
  • Scanned copies of your general GRE, subject GRE and TOEFL scores.
  • Scanned copies of papers, preprints or anything else you think would help your application.

Copies of your transcripts, GRE scores or TOEFL scores uploaded here DO NOT REPLACE the official copies that should be sent to us.
