The Visiting and Early Scholars’ Experiences in Mathematics Research Experiences for Undergraduates (VERSEIM-REU) is an intensive ten-week summer research program in applied and pure mathematics. VERSEIM is sponsored by the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates under grant DMS 2050412 and the Department of Mathematics at Tufts University. 

VERSEIM scholars will be mentored by faculty members and graduate students in the Department of Mathematics and the VERSE Program at Tufts University. Many of our events will be joint with scholars in the VERSE program and other REUs at Tufts University. VERSEIM 2022 will run from May 30 to August 5 2022.  

The following research projects will be offered this summer:

  1. Data Science and Graph Theory, directed by Dr. James Murphy
  2. Analysis on fractals and graphs, directed by Dr. Kasso Okoudjou
  3. Limited Data Tomography, directed by Dr. Todd Quinto
  4. Mathematical Biology, directed by Dr. Christoph Börgers
  5. Number theory, directed by Dr. Robert Oliver Lemke
  6. Spectral graph theory, directed by Dr. Fulton Gonzalez
EligibilityThe program is open only to US citizens or permanent residents who are current students  majoring in mathematics or related fields at any US college or university. Our program is aimed at students early in their college career, and we are committed to enhancing the educational experiences of first-generation or underrepresented undergraduate students.

Stipend: $6000, for the ten weeks. Students will also receive a food and housing allowance.

  • Two letters of recommendation.
