Graduate Research Opportunities for Women (GROW) 2020 is a conference for female-identified students interested in graduate school in the mathematical sciences.

When and where is GROW 2020?

GROW 2020 Conference:  September 13, October 18 and 24

Note: Given the continuing risks and uncertainty related to COVID-19, we have revised our plans for GROW 2020. It will take place online via Zoom over the following days: September 13, and October 18 and 24. Each of these sessions will start at 12:00pm CDT, and include a panel session, one or two talks, and breakout sessions.

What does GROW 2020 cost?

There is no cost for participating in GROW. Participants will need a device on which they can use Zoom, and internet access.

Activities include:
  • Research Lectures
  • Panel Discussions on mathematical sciences: Getting into Graduate School; Careers in Academia; Research in the Mathematical Sciences
  • Networking Opportunities
  • Help with preparing applications for graduate school, REU’s, and Semester Long Programs
  • Opportunities for mentoring by graduate students and faculty
  • Meet previous GROW participants and hear about their experiences
Who can apply?
  • Are you currently an undergraduate woman (cis-gendered, transgendered, or female-identified) or nonbinary individual?
  • Will you be an undergraduate in academic year 2020-2021?
  • Are you thinking about graduate school in the mathematical sciences?
  • Do you want to know more about graduate school in the mathematical sciences?
  • Do you want advice on preparing yourself for graduate school?
  • Do you want to know more about careers in the mathematical sciences in academia?
To apply, complete the MathPrograms.org application and submit the following:
  • One (1) letter of recommendation
  • A copy of an unofficial undergraduate transcript
Review of applications begins on June 15, 2020 and acceptances will be made on a rolling basis. Any application completed by September 1, 2020 will receive full consideration.

GROW 2020 is sponsored by the Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation, the University of Chicago Department of Mathematics and the National Science Foundation.
