Summer 2019 REU: Computational and Experimental Mathematics

The Mathematics and Computer Science Department of Moravian College Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program concentrates on research projects associated with experimental mathematics and its role in stimulating new research. Experimental mathematics has been described as “an approach to mathematics in which computation is used to investigate mathematical objects and identify properties and patterns.” (E. W. Weisstein, “Experimental Mathematics,” MathWorld) Mathematicians have always used experimental mathematics techniques, but the advancement of computer technology has given new life to the subject by using tools from numerical methods, precision arithmetic, and integer relation algorithms, among others. One useful tool is the OEIS, which includes over 300,000 sequences. The list was started by Neil J. A. Sloane in 1964 when he began collecting integer sequences on file cards. These were eventually published as A Handbook of Integer Sequences in 1973 by Academic Press. The popularity of the Handbook and subsequent publications led to the website, which has continued to add to its sequence database.

Application Deadline: Review of applications begins March 15 and will continue until all slots are filled.
