Program Description:

We invite you to submit your application to be a student at the Ross Mathematics Program. There are two locations for the Ross Programs, and this single application is for both.

To be considered for acceptance, you must:

  • First, begin the application process by creating a Standard Coversheet and then completing the Ross Program coversheet. Submit demographic information as well as your responses to a handful of short-answer questions. The application problems and essays can be uploaded later.
  • On the page with the short-answer questions, you will be asked to upload your carefully written solutions to the Application Problems. Solutions to each problem must be uploaded as a separate PDF. The Admissions Committee is not looking for quick answers written in minimal space, but rather a readable mathematical exposition that includes evidence of your explorations, conjectures, and proofs.
  • Also on that page, you will be asked to upload a "personal statement." That essay serves as your introduction to the Admissions Committee, and provides an opportunity for you to discuss your interest in mathematics and your goals for your participation in the Ross Program.
  • Arrange for a mathematics teacher who knows you well to upload a recommendation letter ("reference letter") here on mathprograms.org. You should add your teacher's email on your Standard Coversheet; then instructions will be sent to the teacher to submit his/her letter.
  • If your native language is not English, please upload a score report on that page. Such score reports for the TOEFL iBT, IELTS, or iTEP might be waived for applicants who have other ways to establish their fluency in English.
  • Upload a scanned copy of your high school transcript.
  • Optionally upload a curriculum vitae or résumé highlighting your accomplishments.

The Admission Committee will start reading applications on March 1, 2018 and will make admission decisions on a rolling basis. The deadline for applications is April 1, but spaces will fill as applications arrive. For adequate consideration of your application, it is best to complete your application well before the end of March.

If you have questions about the admissions process, please contact ross@math.osu.edu.

Personal Statement

For your Personal Statement, please write a couple of pages discussing the following questions, and related topics.

  • What aspect of mathematics draws your interest and attention? Are you interested in math for its own sake? For the thrill of solving puzzling problems. Or because math has important applications to other fields?
  • Do you have some strong academic interests in addition to math? For instance, are you intensively studying physics? Or economics? Are you serious about Chinese literature, paleontology, or modern dance?
  • What do you hope to gain by attending this challenging summer program?
  • How do you like to spend your time?
  • What are your hobbies or interests outside of school?

Reference Letter

When you add your teacher's email address to the Standard Coversheet, mathprograms will automatically send your teacher an email inviting him/her to submit a reference letter.
