program Description

International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2026 Travel Grant Program - Established Mathematicians

With generous anticipated funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the American Mathematical Society (AMS) is pleased to offer the Expanding U.S. Mathematician Access Participation at the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2026 Travel Grant Program for U.S.-based established mathematicians. If the award is received, this program will offer travel grants to provide partial support to attend the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) to be held July 23-30, 2026, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. For the purposes of this program, an established mathematician will have earned their PhD at least seven years ago (June 2019 or earlier).

Selection for ICM 2026 Travel Grants will be based on applicants’ eligibility for the program, their publications and research record, and the potential impact of the ICM on their professional development.

Grant is contingent upon receipt from the National Science Foundation. If the award is not received, the AMS may modify or cancel the program. Applications are being accepted prior to receipt of the NSF award to ensure that grantees can be notified of their status by the end of June 2026.

Who is eligible for this grant?

Applicants must live and work in the United States.

For the purposes of this program, established mathematicians will have earned their PhD during or before June 2019.

Note: For any program, fellowship, prize, or award that has a maximum period of eligibility after receipt of the doctoral degree, the selection panel may use discretion in making exceptions to the limit on eligibility for candidates whose careers have been interrupted for reasons such as family or health. Therefore, an applicant who has had to slow down or temporarily stop their career for personal reasons may request that they be considered for an extension in the amount of time after the PhD degree.

What will this grant provide?

This grant will provide partial travel support to attend ICM 2026. The travel grants will be up to $2,400 for established mathematicians. Eligible expenses will include economy roundtrip transportation from a grantee's home/institution to Philadelphia, one checked bag, ground transportation for one round trip between home and airport and one round trip from hotel/accommodations to airport, registration for ICM 2026, hotel/accommodations, and meals.

Grantees are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to the meeting, registering, and paying appropriate fees.
