program Description

Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is a professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. It addresses all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, finding exciting and interesting service opportunities, and participating in professional activities. It also provides the participants with a network of peers and mentors as they assume these responsibilities. Since 1994, over 2500 NExTers have appeared in all capacities in the academic mathematical profession, including many leadership positions at their home institutions and in the MAA. Applications are due April 15th for all applicants, whether already in a full-time teaching position or moving to a new one the following Fall. Decisions will be sent out by June 1. If accepted into the program, you will be expected to participate in the following conferences, which will be held in person unless otherwise indicated: We will ask chairs and/or deans to make a commitment to supporting applicants to attend these events, and also to support them in non-financial ways. We estimate that the total cost to travel to the three in-person events is around $6000 and we ask institutions to promise support to their faculty members for all required events, including time to attend virtual events; we understand that many institutions are in difficult budget situations and that level of support might not be possible. While we do not currently have travel grants, we are hoping to establish some in the future for those from institutions who cannot afford to support their faculty.

For details on the application process, including descriptions of what we are looking for in the Personal Statement and CV, see the Applicant FAQ. [Note that the mathjobs default language for "reference letters" doesn't exactly fit MAA Project NExT. Your reference letter (you only need one) should come from the chair or dean at the institution where you will be teaching in the Fall. In particular, the letter prompt will ask your chair or dean to fill out a form detailing their support of your participation in Project NExT. It's really more of a Form of Support than a Reference Letter - but we couldn't change the default language.]

Application Materials Required:
Submit the following items online at this website to complete your application:
  • Personal Statement (2p max)
  • CV (any number of pages)
  • Reference letter (to be submitted online by the reference writers on this site help popup)
And anything else requested in the program description.
