Apprentice Faculty, National Math Camps (Summer Role)Are you passionate about mathematics and excited to grow as an educator while making a meaningful impact? National Math Camps is seeking Apprentice Faculty who want to strengthen their teaching skills and help talented middle school students experience the joy of deep mathematical discovery.
This position is part of our Faculty Training Program, designed for graduate students and early-career mathematicians who want to level up their teaching through hands-on experience in an immersive and supportive environment. Apprentice Faculty work closely with the Academic Director or another experienced instructor on our signature Math Explorations course, assisting and observing the faculty member lead one section of the class and then teaching their own section later that day.
Math Explorations introduces students to the full mathematical process—from formulating questions to exploring solutions, writing up findings, and presenting results. Along the way, students strengthen their problem-solving, communication, and persistence while discovering the joy and beauty of mathematics.
For 2026, our camps will be held at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA (Camp Conway), and William Peace University in Raleigh, NC (Camp Sierpinski), with each camp hosting two 2-week sessions. Apprentice Faculty are required to teach both sessions at their assigned camp and participate in onsite pre-camp training. Apprentice Faculty must have completed at least one year of a master’s or PhD program in mathematics or a related field. Room, board, and round-trip travel are provided.
Successful Apprentice Faculty may be invited to return the following summer as Junior Faculty, with the opportunity to design and teach their own Topics Courses under faculty mentorship.

What You'll Do
- Assist and Teach Math Classes. Work closely with your Senior Faculty mentor to review the day’s lesson plan and collaboratively make any needed adjustments. You will assist and observe your mentor as they teach the early-afternoon section, then teach your own section later that day using the same materials and structure. Throughout the process, you’ll receive direct feedback and mentorship on your teaching. Each section meets for eight 75-minute sessions over the two-week camp and includes about 15 students, supported by both a lead instructor and a learning assistant.
- Participate in Open Math Time each evening. Engage with students each evening through puzzles, hands-on activities, small-group explorations, problem stations, or informal math conversations.
- Contribute to Morning Assembly. At least once during the summer, serve as the assembly speaker by giving an interactive math talk or leading an all-camp activity.
- Engage with students during lunch. Sit with students at lunch each academic day to build relationships and support our community-centered culture.
- Document camper progress. Regularly record observations about campers in your classes.
- Foster community & participate in camp life. Build meaningful relationships with campers and contribute to a welcoming, inclusive, and joyful camp culture.
- Assist with arrivals and departures. Help with camper check-in and check-out, welcome families, guide students through orientation, and participate in airport pickups or drop-offs as assigned.
- Assist with other duties as assigned. We each have specific roles, but making camp run smoothly requires everyone to pitch in when needed.
- Completed at least one year of a Masters/PhD program in mathematics or a closely related field.
- Experience engaging in mathematical research, including writing up and presenting your results.
- Experience as a teaching/learning assistant, tutor, or instructor, and a desire to further develop your teaching skills.
- Prior experience teaching advanced middle school students is a plus but not required.
- Experience with active learning or inquiry-based approaches, or interest in learning more about them.
- Energy, enthusiasm, and a genuine excitement for working with talented young students.
- A passion for teaching and for making deep mathematical ideas engaging and accessible.
- Willingness to fully immerse yourself in camp life—living on-site, participating in traditions, and helping build a supportive, vibrant, and delightfully nerdy community.
We have the following dates & locations available for summer 2026:
- 6/18 - 7/18 at Camp Conway (Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, CA)
- 6/25 - 7/25 at Camp Sierpinski (William Peace University, Raleigh, NC)
Logistics - Compensation
- $4,000 for the full period listed above, plus room, board, and round-trip travel
- Up to 5 hours of remote pre-camp training, paid at $22.50/hour
