program Description

We invite applications for an 8-week undergraduate research experience from May 31 to July 25, 2026, at the School of Mathematical and Data Sciences of West Virginia University (WVU) in Morgantown.

Participants will work in groups with faculty advisors Charis Tsikkou and Adrian Tudorascu and will also attend workshops and educational activities organized by the WVU Office of Undergraduate Research.

Participants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program. Applications are welcome from rising sophomores through rising seniors. Applicants should major in mathematics or a closely related field and have sufficient mathematical background; prior coursework in ordinary differential equations is recommended. We especially encourage applications from students attending colleges and universities in the Appalachian region and, more broadly, from institutions with limited opportunities for STEM research experiences, as well as from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in mathematics and the sciences, including students from minority backgrounds, women, students with disabilities, veterans, students from rural areas, first-generation college students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Selection will be based on academic preparation, interest in research, and the overall composition of the cohort.

Each participant will receive a stipend of $5,600, on-campus housing, an additional meal stipend, and partial travel support to and from Morgantown, WV. The program is restricted to U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a transcript, a personal statement of interest that includes a ranking of the topics (check website for more info), from highest to lowest, on which you would like to work, and two letters of recommendation. Applications submitted by February 15 will be fully reviewed. The application will remain open until all 10 slots are filled.

We are not accepting applications for this program through MathPrograms.Org right now. Please apply at https://etap.nsf.gov/award/6572/opportunity/11748 external link.
