program Description

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY BEFORE APPLYING OR EMAILING WITH QUESTIONS.

The Polymath Jr program is an online research program for undergraduates. The program consists of projects in a wide variety of mathematical fields. Each project is run by a professor who is an expert on that field, with PhD students and postdocs as additional mentors. In each project, we work towards proving a new result and publishing these in a paper. A lot more information can be found on our website (https://geometrynyc.wixsite.com/polymathreu).

The participants do not receive funding, but can decide the capacity in which they wish to participate (we do fund some participant travel to present research results at conferences). You are welcome to choose what you want to get out of the program and spend an amount of time that fits that: from intense research work towards making mathematical breakthroughs, to just getting a first impression of what math research looks like.

The only eligibility criteria is experience with proof writing. Preferably, participating in a college course that requires writing your own proofs. A letter from a math professor is also required in the application. DO NOT UPLOAD ANYTHING OTHER THAN YOUR AMS COVERSHEET (THAT SHOULD CLEARLY STATE WHERE YOU ARE STUDYING, IF YOU ARE A US CITIZEN/PERMANENT RESIDENT OR OTHER, WHAT YEAR YOU ARE IN YOUR STUDIES, WHAT IS THE BEST EMAIL TO USE FOR YOU) AND A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION; we are not looking to read papers you have written or transcripts. We just need a letter from a professor saying you have taken a class with proofs and are comfortable doing proofs.

Women and students from underrepresented minorities are highly encouraged to apply.

We encourage participants to apply in March, after having some idea of whether they were accepted to a standard program. THUS YOU SHOULD WAIT TILL AT LEAST MARCH 15TH TO APPLY, AS IF YOU GET IN TO AN IN-PERSON PROGRAM YOU SHOULD DO THAT AND NOT HAVE AN APPLICATION IN THE SYSTEM HERE. YOU CANNOT DO THIS PROGRAM AND ANOTHER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE; IF YOU FIND OUT AFTER APPLYING THAT YOU WILL DO ANOTHER RESEARCH PROGRAM PLEASE WITHDRAW YOUR APPLICATION FROM HERE IMMEDIATELY.

In your application, please make sure to fill out the year when you expect to receive your undergraduate degree (this is found in the AMS coversheet).

Applications are due by 5pm US Eastern time on April 8th; so long as all your materials arrive by then your application will receive full consideration.

For any questions or comment, you are welcome to write to Steven Miller at sjm1@williams.edu.
