program Description
International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2026 Travel Grant Program - Graduate Student Mathematicians
With generous funding from the National Science Foundation
(NSF), the American Mathematical Society (AMS) is pleased to offer the International
Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2026 Travel Grant Program. This program
will offer travel grants to provide partial support for U.S.-based
mathematicians to attend the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) to
be held July 23-30, 2026, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
Selection for ICM 2026 Travel Grants will be based on
applicants’ eligibility for the program, their publications and research
record, the potential impact of the ICM on their professional development, and
need. Priority in funding will be given to early-career mathematical
scientists.
Who is eligible for this grant?
Applicants must live and work/study in the United States and have home and institution mailing addresses outside a 50-mile radius of the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
Applications will be accepted from mathematical scientists
in the following career stages.
Graduate students
- Students enrolled in a PhD (or its equivalent) program in the mathematical sciences at a U.S. institution.
- Students who anticipate graduating in December 2025, May 2026, or August 2026 should apply as graduate students, not as early career mathematicians.
Early career
- U.S.-based mathematicians who completed the PhD (or its equivalent) within the last six years (between September 1, 2019 and August 31, 2025 inclusive).
Note: For any program, fellowship, prize, or award
that has a maximum period of eligibility after receipt of the doctoral degree,
the selection panel may use discretion in making exceptions to the limit on
eligibility for candidates whose careers have been interrupted for reasons such
as family or health. Therefore, an applicant who has had to slow down or
temporarily stop their career for personal reasons may request that they be
considered for an extension in the amount of time after the PhD degree.
What will this grant provide?
This grant will provide partial travel support to attend ICM
2026. The travel grants will be up to $2,400 for graduate student and career grantees. Eligible expenses
will include economy roundtrip airfare, hotel/accommodations, meals, and event registration.
Grantees are responsible for making their own travel
arrangements to the meeting, registering, and paying appropriate fees.
What is the timeline for this grant?
- Applications will be accepted until Monday, October 20, 2025 (11:59 p.m. EDT). An optional reference letter is also due by Monday, October 20, 2025 (11:59 p.m. EDT).
