Program Description:

program Description
The Chicago REU has been in operation since 2000, but before 2015 it was limited to University of Chicago participants. It has since been open to broader participation. It has served as a springboard for current graduate students at virtually all of the top departments of mathematics in the United States. The program will have limited funding for 2025 with none for international students. However, applications from both domestic and international students based in the U.S. are welcome, and acceptance will be on a need blind basis. (Added January 23, 2025: more reasonable funding for domestic participants is now assured.) The REU is run by University of Chicago faculty members. Participants are closely mentored by University of Chicago graduate students and faculty. The program is focused on exposing participants to a broad swathe of advanced mathematics through informal faculty taught courses. Typical topics each year include topology, geometry, number theory, probability, analysis, and logic. The program is not focused on original undergraduate research per se, but all participants must write a paper on a topic chosen by them, in consultation with their mentors and faculty. Topics are frequently inspired by courses, but that is not required. The papers are usually expository, often on highly advanced topics, but can be and often are original research or a blend of exposition and research. They must be substantial. Papers from previous years are posted on the past years' web sites. While no previous knowledge or study in the areas taught is required, previous experience in proof-based courses is essential. There is also an apprentice program aimed at those with less mathematical experience. It is focused on discrete mathematics and is closely tied to an apprentice course. It lasts five weeks, but participants may stay the full eight weeks. Its participants are typically outstanding first or second year students who have not yet been in advanced mathematics courses. Application deadline is February 7, 2025Application Materials Required:
