program Description

The Brin Mathematics Research Center (brinmrc.umd.edu) is a research center that sponsors activity in all areas of pure and applied mathematics and statistics. The Brin MRC is part of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Maryland, College Park.

A Summer School on Tracer Mixing in Fluids Across Planetary Scales will be held at the Brin MRC from July 8 - July 19, 2024. Tracers provide a window into the emergent dynamics of fluid systems, and are applied to study mixing and circulation across planetary scales from the deep interior to the overlying oceans and atmospheres. This two-week summer school will focus on tracer mixing on Earth, across the Solar System, and on exoplanets. Topics will include Earth’s interior dynamics, geophysical fluid dynamics, physical oceanography, and atmospheric circulation. Additionally, we will discuss fluid mixing in exoplanets and in the Solar System, including Venus, gas and ice giant planets, and their icy moons. The school will consist of lectures given by internationally recognized experts in planetary fluid dynamics, poster presentations by student attendees, and interactive research experiences to forge new implementations and applications of tracers to the study of planetary fluid dynamics theory, simulations, experiments, and observations.

We would like to solicit applications for participation in the summer school. The Brin MRC does not reimburse visa fees.

Application materials: Each applicant must provide a current CV, a cover letter (maximum 2 pages) detailing relevant research experience and a statement of how the summer school will benefit their research, and a letter of recommendation. The cover letter should include a commitment to attend the two-week summer school in its entirety. For best consideration please apply by February 26, 2024. We encourage early career mathematicians, geophysical and astrophysical fluid dynamicists, and planetary scientists from across the world to apply. For questions please email brinmrc@umd.edu.

Application Materials Required:
Submit the following items online at this website to complete your application:
  • Cover letter
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Reference letter (to be submitted online by the reference writers on this site help popup)
And anything else requested in the program description.
