program Description

The G-RIPS Program

Graduate-Level Research in Industrial Projects for Students (G-RIPS) will offer graduate students in mathematics and related disciplines the opportunity to work on industry-sponsored research.

G-RIPS will be offered in two locations: Berlin, Germany (in cooperation with MODA) and Sendai, Japan (in cooperation with AIMR).

G-RIPS Berlin

Graduate-Level Research in Industrial Projects for Students (G-RIPS) in Berlin will offer graduate students in mathematics and related disciplines the opportunity to work on industry-sponsored research problems in Berlin, Germany. Students from the U.S. and Europe will work on cross-cultural teams on research problems designed by industrial sponsors. The projects will be of serious interest to the sponsor and will offer a stimulating challenge to students; most will involve both analytic and computational work. At the end of the program, the teams will present the results of their work and prepare a final report. IPAM will encourage the U.S. students to publish and/or present their research at conferences in the year following the program. English is the only language required for participation.

Round-trip travel to Berlin and accommodations in Berlin are included. Students will also receive a meal allowance and a stipend. (These terms apply to U.S. participants recruited by IPAM; you must be a US citizen, national, or permanent resident to apply through IPAM. European students may apply through MODAL.)

G-RIPS Sendai

Graduate-Level Research in Industrial Projects for Students (G-RIPS) in Japan will offer graduate students in mathematics and related disciplines the opportunity to work on industry-sponsored research problems in Sendai, Japan. Students from the U.S. and Japan will work on cross-cultural teams on research problems designed by industrial sponsors.

Round-trip travel to Sendai and accommodations in Sendai are included. Students will also receive a meal allowance and a stipend, and conference support to present their research. (These terms apply to U.S. participants recruited by IPAM; you must be a US citizen, national, or permanent resident to apply through IPAM.)

The application deadline is February 23, 2024. Please note that the application closes at 8:59 pm Pacific Time (11:59 pm Eastern).

IPAM is committed to equity and diversity in the mathematical sciences. We strongly encourage members of traditionally underrepresented groups including women to apply.
