The Queens Experiences in Discrete Mathematics (QED) REU site, hosted at York College at the City University of New York in Jamaica, Queens, provides a student-centered and collaborative environment for up to ten (10) undergraduates to conduct research in discrete mathematics over the course of the 2023-2024 academic year. Recruitment efforts for this REU site target public and private universities in Queens and the greater New York City area, and emphasize outreach to women, students from underrepresented backgrounds (Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American/First Nations, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, etc), students with disabilities, and community college attendees. The program aims to increase retention and graduation rates and to diversify the population of graduate school applicants and researchers in the mathematical sciences.

Participants in the QED REU will conduct research in the area of discrete mathematics, more specifically, on topics such as partition theory, algebraic combinatorics, graph theory, automata theory, and formal language theory. The main goals are for participants to produce results of interest and relevance and learn how to communicate their research both in presentation and writing.

Those selected will receive a (i) stipend of at least 7200 (US) paid over the 2023-2024 academic year, (ii) financial support to present their work at a regional or national conference, and (iii) the possibility to enroll for credit-bearing research seminars at York. Students will also receive academic guidance towards their undergraduate studies as well as support towards their future educational and professional goals, especially with regards to graduate school. Students will be expected to dedicate 8-10 hours a week for the full academic year to the REU.

Candidates should have demonstrated enthusiasm and curiosity in mathematics, as well as an ability to work independently. While there are no formal prerequisites to apply, preference will be given to applicants who have taken Calculus I & II. Experience with higher level mathematics courses (Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra) and proofs will also be helpful. More flexibility will be given to students applying from community colleges.

Applicants should arrange for (at least) one letter of recommendation from a Professor that can speak to their mathematical enthusiasm, curiosity and creativity. The personal statement should speak to a candidate's interest in mathematics and their future goals, specifically stating if they are considering going to graduate school in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field. Students should explicitly state they would be willing to dedicate 8-10 hours a week to research training and research activities during the program. Biographical information as well as preferred pronouns, affinity groups, and whether the applicant has previously participated in a research program can also be included.

QED is an academic-year REU, from September 2023 to May 2024, centered at York College in Jamaica, Queens. Since a large portion of the program will be in-person, preference will be given to those attending colleges and universities in-and-around Queens, although anyone can apply.
