The REU is an 8 week summer program in the Applied Mathematics group at UCLA. Students will have the opportunity to join an active research group with projects in machine learning, social justice, data science for sociology, and other areas. The successful applicant will work with faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and other undergraduates. Throughout the summer, the REU program will be augmented by faculty-run informational sessions on research, careers in mathematics, and preparing for graduate school.

Program dates will be more variable this year depending on the project. The core program will start June 13 and finish August 5. In the final week of the program, students are expected to present the results of their research in both a written report and an oral presentation. For some projects the students may be asked to write software. The faculty mentor will identify the "deliverables" at the beginning of the summer and will work closely with the students in preparing the final result.

This will be an online program and participants are expected to be in a location where they can participate during business hours (9a-5p) in Los Angeles.

Students writing a research statement preference should write about their general research interests and are welcome to look at topics from past programs. THIS PROGRAM IS NOT TAKING PLACE AT IPAM DESPITE THE ACRONYM ON MATH PROGRAMS.

Eligibility

• The UCLA Applied Math REU is a National program! Students from all over the United States are invited to apply. We expect to have some project sponsored by UCLA and Southern California schools and priority for those projects will be given to students from the regional area.
• Applicants from UCLA need not be US Citizens or permanent residents. Students from other campuses who are not US/PR should have some guaranteed funding from the home institution.
• Students must be available for the full 8-week period June 13 to August 5, on a full time basis. Courses and other employment activities may not be conducted concurrent with the program.
• The target applicants for this program are undergraduate students who are applied math majors with advanced standing, but all scientific majors are encouraged to apply. Past REU participants have been majors in pure mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. This program may have parts of it functioning in person and parts taking place online.
• Please indicate your project preference in your statement - and see our website for a list of proposed projects.
• We may have funding for a few UCLA PhD students in the early years of the program and information will be sent to them separately.
