Program Description:

*** this program has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is a professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. It addresses all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, finding exciting and interesting service opportunities, and participating in professional activities. It also provides the participants with a network of peers and mentors as they assume these responsibilities. Since 1994, over 2200 NExTers have appeared in all capacities in the academic mathematical profession, including many leadership positions at their home institutions and in the MAA. The first round of applications for any one summer's MAA Project NExT cohort is due on October 15th. New(ish) faculty already in full-time teaching positions should use this deadline. Decisions will be sent out by December 1. Those accepting positions during the academic year (to start the following Fall) should use the second application deadline of April 15th. Those decisions will be set out by June 1. Unless explicit permission is given, only one application for a given cohort will be considered. If accepted into the program, you will be expected to attend three conferences, which will (fingers crossed!) be held in person:
  • MathFest in Philadelphia (Aug 1-6, 2022)
  • Joint Math Meetings in Boston (January 3-7, 2023)
  • MathFest in Tampa (August 1-5, 2023)
We know that because of the pandemic, travel budgets at many institutions are tight or even frozen. Rather than asking institutions to commit to a particular dollar figure for travel support, we are asking deans and chairs to make a commitment to supporting applicants in non-financial ways, and are also asking how much travel support they could commit to. Pre-pandemic, institutions were asked to promise at least $4500 of support; we understand that many institutions are in difficult budget situations and that level of support might not be possible. A limited number of travel grants may be available to those from institutions who cannot afford to support their faculty.

For details on the application process, including descriptions of what we are looking for in the Personal Statement, Research Statement, and CV, see the Applicant FAQ. [Note that the mathjobs default language for "reference letters" doesn't exactly fit MAA Project NExT. Your reference letter (you only need one) should come from the chair or dean at the institution where you will be teaching in the Fall. It's really more of a Letter of Support than a Reference Letter - but we couldn't change the default language.]
