program Description

The UCLA Computational and Applied Mathematics REU is an 8 week summer program in the Applied Math group at UCLA. Students will have the opportunity to join a research group with projects in scientific computing, mathematical modeling, machine learning, data science, and other areas.  Successful applicants will work with faculty members on active research topics. Throughout the summer, the REU program will be augmented by faculty-run informational sessions on research, careers in mathematics, and preparing for graduate school.

The core program will start in the middle of June and finish at the beginning of August. In the final week of the program, students are expected to present the results of their research in both a written report and an oral presentation. For some projects, the students may be expected to write software. The faculty mentor will identify the "deliverables" at the beginning of the summer and will work closely with the students in preparing the final result.

Most projects will be in person but we expect to have some options for hybrid participation from within the US during business hours (9a-5p) in Los Angeles.

Summer 2026 projects are being developed and will be listed below (see "Further Information"). Students writing a Research Project Preference Statement must include their general research interests based on the listed projects.
