program Description

The University of Minnesota Equivariant Neural Network REU is a six-week program (May 27 - July 3, 2025) designed to engage students in research problems in machine learning, in particular, developing equivariant neural networks that handle partial symmetries, with real-life applications. We are seeking two students to work on a project in close collaboration with faculty mentor Professor Erkao Bao as well as graduate student mentors. Students will share an office in the School of Mathematics and have daily access to both faculty and graduate student mentors.

Participants will receive a stipend of $3,600 and up to $600 for transportation expenses for non-locals. The program will also provide living expenses and meals for non-locals. Undergraduates (college and university students) pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree and who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents or U.S. nationals are eligible to apply. Members of underrepresented groups (women, minorities, persons with disabilities), as well as students who may not otherwise have research opportunities, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Application deadline: February 9, 2024.

Requirements: Applicants should have some familiarity with the most basic group theory and be comfortable reading Python code. Experience with TensorFlow is a plus.
