program Description

The RTG Mathematics Summer Research Program (MSRP) at USC is an annual summer research program aimed at outstanding undergraduates interested in differential geometry, topology, representation theory and/or combinatorics. We are gratefully supported by the National Science Foundation under NSF RTG Award DMS-2446019 and the USC Dornsife College of Arts and Sciences.

The research program will consist of a remote pre-program and a residential main program. The three month pre-program (from early April to early June) will consist of assigned background reading and bi-weekly discussions with a graduate student mentor over Zoom. The seven week research program (from late June to mid August) will take place at USC. It will consisting of guided research in small groups, under the mentorship of an RTG graduate fellow and supervising RTG faculty. Each group will be expected to produce a project report or a research article. Outside of the research activities, participants will be able to enjoy the city of Los Angeles, and weekly activities such as lunches, museum visits and hikes will be organized for participants.

This program will admit four undergraduate participants from all US institutions (US citizens, nationals and permanent residents only) and up to four additional undergraduates currently attending the University of Southern California. Applicants should submit 1-2 reference letters and an unofficial transcript. All undergraduates are welcome to apply, but competitive applicants should have a strong background in proof-based mathematics coursework.

USC participants are required to apply for funding through the USC SURF Program upon acceptance. Non-USC participants will be funded by the USC RTG project and must be citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States or its territories and possessions.
