The Fellows of the American Mathematical Society

The Fellows of the American Mathematical Society program recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics. The 2024 class of Fellows will be chosen by the AMS' Selection Committee, comprised of 12 members of the AMS who are also Fellows. The Council will determine the number of new Fellows each year. Those members chosen by the Selection Committee are then invited to become Fellows of the AMS.

The nomination period for the next class of Fellows begins on February 1, 2023, and ends March 31, 2023 (11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

OVERVIEW OF THE NOMINATION PROCESS

The nomination process occurs online on this MathPrograms.org website. Contact information will be requested for the following individuals:

  • the Nominator (the person completing the Nomination Form)
  • the Nominee
  • three (3) Supporting Members
The nominator must provide the following information for the nominee:

  • a citation of fifty words or less explaining the nominee's accomplishments (text only, no special characters)
  • the MR subject code (MSC) or the Expanded Classification System for JMM 2022 and Beyond code regarding the nominee's mathematical work
  • a Curriculum Vitae document of no more than five (5) pages
  • a statement of cause document of 500 words or less explaining why the nominee meets the criteria of Fellowship (Outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics)
Note that it is possible to begin an application and, when only partially completed, SUBMIT the screen and return to it later to continue the work. In this way, some supporters could be emailed right away for their support even if all the supporter names have not yet been entered.

ELIGIBILITY

Nominee: To be eligible for nomination as a Fellow, the individual being nominated must:

  • be an AMS member for the year in which he or she is nominated (2023) and
  • have been a member for the prior year (2022) as of July 31, 2022.

Nominator: To be eligible as a Nominator, a current year (2023) AMS membership is required. Note that a member can serve in the role of Nominator for no more than two (2) nominees per year.

Supporting Member: Each nomination must additionally be supported by three current (2023) AMS members.

Please note that a minimum of two (2) of the four (4) individuals making this nomination (i.e. the Nominator and 3 Supporting Members) must be Fellows of the AMS. It is not possible to nominate oneself.

All 2023 membership qualifications must be met by 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, March 31, 2023.

SUBMISSION

Nominations for entry into the 2024 class of Fellows of the AMS will be accepted from February 1, 2023, through March 31, 2023.

Please establish a login as a nominator at the nomination site [Note: this is not your normal AMS login. It is a MathPrograms.org login]. You may need to return to the form at a later date, so save your login information. It is not necessary to complete all portions of the nomination at once; you may log in multiple times to continue the work or make changes. After March 31, the nomination period will be closed and no further changes can be made.

Members may want to fill out the top portion, wait for confirmation of the membership status, and then proceed with the complete application. Such confirmation will come via email to the Nominator within two to three business days. Please contact the AMS (see below) if you have not received confirmation within this time period. It is the Nominator's responsibility to make sure the application is completed by the deadline; no extensions may be granted. Please note that AMS member codes are not required but will expedite the process of checking memberships. Current (2023) memberships will be checked for the Nominee, Nominator, and for each Supporting Member; Nominators will be notified about any qualification problems.

CONFIRMATION BY SUPPORTING MEMBERS

The selection committee has noted that the efforts of the three supporters of a nomination to write short effective statements can make a big difference in the chances of success for a nomination. The three Supporting Members named on the application will receive an email verification form (generated automatically when the Nominator submits the nomination form). Please mark the "email" box next to each Supporting Member name when you are ready to have that email sent, and SUBMIT the whole screen. Supporting Members will then use the instructions in that email to confirm their support and also provide a sentence or two (1000 character limit, no special characters) why they are supporting this nomination. After the Supporting Member completes that step, the Nominator will be able to log in to the nomination screen and see a purple date of submission below the name of that Supporting Member. If necessary, Supporting Members can be emailed again through a button on that screen.

SELECTION

By submitting the nomination, you are nominating the individual ("Nominee") to become a Fellow of the AMS in the current round. This is a competitive process which may or may not result in the Nominee becoming a Fellow.

The 2024 class of Fellows will be chosen by the AMS Selection Committee, comprised of 12 members of the AMS who are also Fellows.

Invitations to become a Fellow of the AMS will be issued to those selected in early September. Any person who is nominated and is not selected a Fellow will remain an active nominee to be considered by the Selection Committee for possible selection for a further two years. In either case, the nominator will be notified on November 1 when the new list is made public.
