Program Description:

*** this program has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

We will host two programs this summer at Clemson University as part of a Research Training Group in Coding Theory, Cryptography, and Number Theory sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU):
Eight participants will be introduced to various tools, techniques and problems from Coding Theory, Cryptography and Number Theory during an 8 week program from May 23 - July 15, 2022. The goal of the program will be to help students attain a higher level of independence in mathematical research by giving them the opportunity to take part in a significant and interesting research project and conduct original research. For a list of possible problems and information on past REU research, please visit
http://www.math.clemson.edu/ccnt/undergraduate/reu/
The target audience for the REU is students that have a solid undergraduate mathematics background such as courses in linear algebra, abstract algebra, or analysis and/or have conducted some independent studies at their home institutions. It is not expected that you have taken part in an REU or conducted original research before this program.

Pending approval for funding, Clemson University will host an REU in Number Theory.

Preliminary REU (pREU):
In this summer program, five students explore concepts from linear algebra and abstract algebra (especially finite fields) as well as selected topics from algebraic geometry in the context of problems in coding theory, data storage, or cryptography. The pREU will run from May 23 - June 24, 2022. The program is designed to expose students to advanced topics in the context of intriguing problems and projects that encourage students to work as a team. Hence, the students are better equipped for an REU in terms of mathematical knowledge and maturity as well as independent working ability and collaborative skills. Students will collaborate on a final project which will be presented at the summer program as well as at their home institution. For more information on this program please visit
https://www.math.clemson.edu/ccnt/undergraduate/preu/
The target audience for the pREU is students who have not yet completed courses in linear algebra, abstract algebra, or analysis and have not been involved in a research experience (such as independent studies at home institutions or an REU).

You will be considered for only one of the programs so please select the program that is most suitable for your current level of mathematical maturity.

Please note that a decision about the modality of the program will be taken in the Spring.
