Mathematics Dept - PURE Math Program, University of Hawai'i at Hilo

Welcome to the Pacific Undergraduate Research Program in Mathematics (PURE Math).

The Summer 2015 program of PURE Math will consist of 2 components:

- the 8-week Residents program for advanced undergraduate mathematics majors (which is similar to a standard REU in mathematics), and

- the 5-week Interns program for students that have completed at least two semesters of calculus and who are interested in being introduced to mathematical research (this may be classified as a pre-REU)

The Residents will perform research on monoids and their factorizations under the guidance of Dr. Roberto Pelayo and Dr. Brian Wissman (both of UH-Hilo). The Interns will be introduced to the topic of computational algebraic geometry, led by Dr. Rebecca Garcia and Dr. Luis Garcia-Puente (both of SHSU).

In addition, all student participants will attend weekly professional development seminars, weekly research presentations by visiting mathematicians, and leisure activities on weekends.

Administrators include the Faculty Advisors from UH-Hilo (Drs. Roberto Pelayo and Brian Wissman), the Faculty Advisors from SHSU (Drs. Rebecca Garcia and Brian Loft) and two doctoral graduate assistants to be determined in Spring 2014.

Due to the restrictions from the federal funding sources (the National Science Foundation and the National Security Agency), all student participants must be either a citizen of the U.S. (or its protectorates) or be a permanent resident of the U.S.
