Program Description:

*** this program has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

This REU program invites up to three undergraduate students to spend 8 weeks in June and July 2021 for a summer research project funded through an NSF grant “Modern Approaches to Modeling and Predicting Bridge Instabilities” (PI: Igor Belykh).

Research projects will be based on predictive methods and biomechanical models of humans' responses to bridge motion and vibrations of grandstands in sports stadiums and concert stages. Selected students will participate in highly interdisciplinary research in applied and computational mathematics and will be given an opportunity to collaborate with the engineering math groups from the University of Bristol and the University of Cambridge, UK.

The program is open to all math, computer science, or engineering undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Computational skills and some knowledge of dynamical systems are highly desirable. Minority students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Each student will receive up to a $5,000 total summer stipend towards covering travel, housing, and meals.

If the pandemic situation allows, the program will be conducted face-to-face at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Otherwise, the program will be held remotely.

The deadline for applications is Mach 15, 2021; however, late submissions may be allowed. Decisions will announced by April 15th.

Applicants should submit an unofficial transcript, CV, personal statement, and at least one reference letter.

For questions, please contact Dr. Igor Belykh (ibelykh@gsu.edu).
