Summer Workshop in Mathematics (SWiM) is a free in-person workshop at Duke University for rising senior high school students who are interested in mathematics, with a particular focus on advancing female participation in math. All students currently in their junior year of high school who reside in the US and are US citizens are eligible.   SWiM is especially interested in increasing diversity in mathematics and in science and technology opportunities more broadly, so SWiM strongly encourages students to apply who are female or gender minorities.

SWiM2023 will take place on campus at Duke University from 10-17 June 2023. All participants will attend two math courses, afternoon group work and SWiM lectures given by local professors at Duke. Participants in the program learn not only about exciting mathematics, but also about discovering new arguments and explaining insights to their peers. Participants will also attend useful panel discussions and learn about a variety of mathematical careers. Participants will conclude the program by giving group presentations.

Throughout the workshop students will interact with undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty of the Department of Mathematics at Duke University, and stay in (chaperoned) on-campus housing. All travel, activities and meals are fully funded.

To complete the application, please do all four steps:

(1) Upload your transcript to this site.

(2) Upload your full or partial solutions for the SWiM2023 Application Problems found on our SWiM webpage to this site. These don't have to be complete solutions: well-explained partial solutions will also receive partial credit.

(3) Upload your Cover Letter. This should include why you are interested in SWiM2023, any accessibility needs you may have, as well your signed pledge. Please also let us know if there are any impediments to you possibly participating if selected, so that we may be able to assist you. You can find detailed info about this cover letter and pledge in the link of SWiM2023 Application Problems above.

(4) Ask your math teacher if they will write you a letter of reference. Submit your teacher's name and email address with your application.  A request for their reference letter will be sent from us -- please do NOT obtain it directly.

The complete application deadline is 1 March 2023. We strongly encourage for you to apply through this site, but if you wish to email your application, please email it by 1 March to swim@math.duke.edu.

Applicants will be notified about the decision by email no later than March 15.
