The Department of Mathematics at Towson University welcomes applications for at least eight enthusiastic, hard-working undergraduate students to participate in a summer research experience. The program runs for eight weeks starting on June 1 and offers subsidized travel to and from Towson, a stipend of $4000, free-on campus housing, and a meal allowance. The student participants are expected to be in residence for the entire duration of the program.

During the first week of the program, faculty mentors will introduce students to the research topics. Students will be divided into groups of two or three, and each group will work closely with two faculty mentors on an open research problem. The research topics for this summer are:
  • Algebraic Graph Theory (Expected background: An introductory abstract algebra course)
  • Model Theory and Machine Learning Theory (Expected background: A proof-based mathematics course)
  • Modeling Crime with Stochastic Processes (Expected background: A calculus-based probability course and programming experience)
Students are expected to present their research findings at a weekly seminar and will write up their final results for publication. Additionally, the program offers numerous professional development opportunities and social activities.

All participating students must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Women, underrepresented minorities, persons with disabilities in research, first generation college students, and veterans are strongly encouraged to apply. Applications should be submitted electronically through

Review of applications will begin on February 28 and continue until all positions are filled. A complete application requires a curriculum vitae, an unofficial transcript, a personal statement expressing interest in this program, a list of math courses completed, a list of project preferences, and two recommendation letters.
