Mathematical Association of America, MAA Project NExT

Program ID: 75-NEXT20 [#844]
Program Title: MAA Project NExT - 2020
Program Type: Graduate or early career program
Program Location: Various locations, United States
Subject Area: Professional Development
Application Deadline: 2019/10/15 (posted 2019/08/30)
Program Description:

Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is a professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. It addresses all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, finding exciting and interesting service opportunities, and participating in professional activities. It also provides the participants with a network of peers and mentors as they assume these responsibilities. Since 1994, about 2000 Fellows have appeared in all capacities in the academic mathematical profession, including many leadership positions at their home institutions and in the MAA. The first round of applications for next summer's MAA Project NExT cohort will be due on October 15th. New(ish) faculty who are already in full-time teaching positions should use this deadline. Decisions will be sent out by December 1. Those accepting positions during this academic year (to start the following Fall) may use the second application deadline of April 15th. Those decisions will be set out by June 1. If accepted into the program, you will be expected to attend three conferences:
  • MathFest in Philadelphia (July 27-Aug 1, 2020)
  • Joint Math Meetings in Washington, DC (January 6-9, 2021)
  • MathFest in Sacramento (August 3-7, 2021)
With few exceptions, successful applicants will have support from their home institution to attend these conferences; a letter from a chair or dean promising up to $4500 in travel support is recommended. A limited number of travel grants may be available to those from institutions who cannot afford to support their faculty.

For details on the application process, including descriptions of what we are looking for in the Personal Statement, Research Statement, and CV, see the Applicant FAQ. [Note that the mathjobs default language for "reference letters" doesn't exactly fit MAA Project NExT. Your reference letter (you only need one) should come from the chair or dean at the institution where you will be teaching in the Fall. It's really more of a Letter of Support than a Reference Letter - but we couldn't change the default language.]
