Interested in experiencing research in probability?

Join us this summer for the second Markov Chains REU at UConn's beautiful Storrs Campus.

The program is eight weeks long, from Monday June 03 2019 through  Friday July 26 2019.

The program is organized by Dr. Iddo Ben-Ari and is generously funded by a grant from the National Security Agency.

Due to funding constraints, we are only able to consider applications from  US citizens or permanent residents.

In this program
  • We will explore some aspects of the  rich and fascinating theory and ubiquitous applications of Markov Chains, through hands-on mathematical research.
  • We will work on scientific communication, teamwork skills and technical skills (writing proofs, LaTeX, creating simulations).
  • We will hold regular weekly mini-courses,  guest speakers and  recreational math sessions.
  • We will work on grad school applications, and will followup and support participants after the program.
  • We will have fun. Guaranteed.
After two-three weeks dedicated to preparation and getting to know each other better, we will split students into two-three person groups, each working on an individual research project. Visit our website for a description of the research projects from summer 2018.

We are looking to form a scientifically diverse group. Although our research is in pure math, we do not restrict our selection to math majors.  Nevertheless, we expect students to have very strong mathematical footing and some basic knowledge of undergraduate probability. Acquaintance with Markov chains or stochastic processes is welcome but is not a requirement.

Each student will receive a stipend of $3,750 and housing  for the duration of the program (a little before or after, if necessary) in shared dorms on campus.

Additional support to help cover travel costs will be available.

To apply, submit the following:
  • At least two reference letters.
  • A cover letter addressed to Dr. Ben-Ari (up to two pages) explaining your mathematical interests and background,  reasons to participate in this particular program and what you expect to gain, your own assessment of your  level of preparation,  additional skills and/or anything you'd like us to consider.
  • Updated CV.
