Hobart & William Smith Colleges REU: Discovering Mathematics in New York State
May 30th through July 31st.

Hobart and William Smith Colleges will provide ten undergraduates a hands-on introduction to mathematics research.  Small research teams of students will be formed to pursue research on topics from a wide variety of mathematical fields. Additionally, a colloquium series and visits to nearby graduate programs will help participants make informed decisions about pursuing a career as a mathematician.

Selected students will receive a $4,500 stipend, on-campus housing, a modest food allowance, and the partial reimbursement of travel expenses to and from campus.  In addition students will be funded to present their work at MathFest in Denver from August 1st-4th.

Research: Participants will work with a research mentor in one of the following areas:
Algebra:  Monomial ideals will be explored through their connection to combinatorial structures such as graphs and their subgraphs.
Graph Theory: Graphs will be investigated with respect to independence number, domination number or magic labelings.
Number Theory: Examine index divisibility in dynamically generated sequences.
Mathematical Phylogenetics: Development and analysis of new methods for reconstructing species trees from genetic data.

Eligibility: Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and must be undergraduates in Fall of 2018. Applications are especially encouraged from students who identify with populations currently underrepresented in mathematics graduate programs, or from schools with limited access to research opportunities.

Application Requirements:
  • Two reference letters (preferably from mathematics faculty)
  • 1-2 page statement describing your mathematical background and interest in this REU program
  • Undergraduate Transcript (an unofficial copy is acceptable at this point).
