SUMSRI seeks talented undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing advanced degrees in the mathematical sciences. We are especially interested (but not limited) to applicants from groups currently underrepresented in these fields.

The central experience in SUMSRI is the research seminar, in which students work in groups under the direction of a faculty member. In addition to the research seminar, students attend short courses in Algebra and Analysis which offer a preview of graduate-level mathematics in these areas. There is a "working seminar" which teaches elements of reading mathematics, as well as style and sound writing, and also a workshop designed to prepare students for the GRE (Mathematics Subject Test). Finally, there are regularly scheduled colloquia throughout the program featuring speakers from both academia and industry.

Applicants must have completed the calculus sequence and at least one proof-based mathematics course with distinction. All candidates must be returning to their home institutions as undergraduates after attending the program, and must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents.

To apply to SUMSRI, please submit two letters of reference from instructors of college-level courses in mathematics (or statistics), transcripts of all college-level work (unofficial versions are fine for the application; if you accept an offer, we will ask for official transcripts), a list of mathematics courses taken including textbooks used, and a statement of purpose. In your statement of purpose, please describe in detail your interest in mathematics, your educational and career goals, and how SUMSRI will help you enhance these.
