Institute for Advanced Study, School of Mathematics
program Description
Description:
Sponsored by Lisa Simonyi, the Minerva Research Foundation, the Robert S. Hillas Fund, Jane Street, the Gerard B. Lambert Foundation, and the Princeton University Department of Mathematics, WAM is an annual program designed to nurture emerging mathematicians of exceptional talent. WAM brings together mathematicians of promise at all career stages (including undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty) to IAS for a week-long workshop each year. Founded in 1994 with the mission to recruit and retain more women in mathematics, WAM is committed to identifying and supporting talent wherever it is found. Women and all who support its mission are welcome to apply.
This year's program will take place June 7-11, 2027, on the topic of Symmetries and the Shape of Motion; see https://www.ias.edu/math/wam/2027 for detailed course descriptions.
Eligibility:
There are three levels of participants:
- undergraduate students
- graduate students
- postdoctoral researchers and faculty
Funding:
- Shared lodging in dorms, hotels, or apartments
- All meals
- Reimbursement for travel
- A childcare fund has been created to cover costs of dependent child care so participants with children can more easily attend the program. More information can be found at https://www.ias.edu/math/wam/child-care-fund
Prerequisites:
Terng Course: Differential forms and vector fields on smooth manifolds, complex numbers and complex vector spaces, and basic point-set topology (proper maps, quotient topology). Comfort with exterior derivative, Lie derivative, and Cartan's magic formula; elementary knowledge of Lie group actions or other group actions; and some exposure to bundles beyond tangent and cotangent bundles would be helpful.
Uhlenbeck Course: Familiarity with smooth manifolds, differential forms, vector fields, and basic notions from differential geometry at the level of a master’s or first year graduate course. Previous exposure to Hamiltonian mechanics or dynamical systems is recommended but not required.
Undergraduate and beginner graduate student applicants must submit a transcript. Advanced graduate students, postdocs, and faculty do not have to submit a transcript.
Application Materials Required:
- Submit the following items online at this website to complete your application:
- Curriculum Vitae
- **Unofficial Transcript
- Reference letter (to be submitted online by the reference writers on this site
)
