The Causeway Postbaccalaureate Certificate Program at Northwestern University is a year-long experience that seeks to increase the number of students from groups historically under-represented in the mathematical sciences who enroll in competitive doctoral programs in these disciplines.  

Beginning in Summer 2023, Causeway participants will undertake a rigorous program of study in foundational coursework, work closely with Northwestern faculty on appropriate research projects, and receive career mentoring while serving as mentors themselves. 

Causeway students pay no tuition and receive a yearly stipend of about $37,000.  Your application will be at no cost to you upon submission. 

1. Statement of Purpose: In 250-500 words, explain how Causeway would enable you to further your academic and career goals, and how your participation would advance the mission of the Program. 

2. Three Letters of Recommendation: At least two of the three letters of recommendation must be from individuals who can address your academic potential. 

3. Unofficial Transcripts. 

4. Supplemental essay: Causeway will help students “narrow the gap” of preparedness for competitive graduate schools, if the gap is neither too large nor too small. In 500-1000 words, describe how your academic preparation makes you a good fit for Causeway. 

Causeway is committed to strengthening and broadening the mathematical sciences, specifically by increasing participation among individuals belonging to groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in graduate study and careers in the mathematical sciences. Finalists will be selected for a remote interview.
