We invite applications for an 8-week undergraduate research experience in the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University during June 6 - July 29, 2022. This REU is part of the NSF-sponsored Research Training Group "Mathematics of Information, Data, and Applications to Science (MIDAS)". Participants will work in teams with the faculty mentor Bjorn Sandstede on applied or theoretical projects in data science. Sample areas include applications in social justice, analysis of biological single cell and fluorescence data, Koopman theory, optimal transport, parameter identification, and topological data analysis of spatio-temporal patterns. Participants will be able to interact with the ICERM Program on "Data Science and Social Justice: Networks, Policy, and Education". We particularly encourage women, members of groups underrepresented in the mathematical sciences, first-generation college students, and students from institutions where research experiences in STEM are limited to apply. Each participant will receive a stipend of $5,000 and will be reimbursed for accommodation, allowable living, and travel expenses of up to $3,000. Applicants should apply through mathprograms and upload a current transcript, a CV, and a personal statement describing their interest in this program. They should also arrange for a letter of reference to be uploaded. The program is restricted to US citizens/nationals and permanent residents. Applications should be received by February 13, 2022 to receive full consideration.
