Travel Grant Program for the 2022 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) - Early Career

The goal of this travel-grant program is to enable US-based mathematicians to participate in the 2022 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), July 6 - 14, 2022 in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Timetable

Applications will be accepted from August 25, 2021 - December 1, 2021. Awards are expected to be made mid to late January 2022.

Funding

With support from the National Science Foundation, the Simons Foundation, and the ICM Local Organizing Committee, the AMS is administering this program to send as many as 240 US-based mathematicians to the Congress.

Early-career awardees will typically receive reimbursement from AMS for their travel to and from St. Petersburg up to $1,500, and all of their local expenses (ground transportation, lodging, meals, registration) will be direct billed and covered through a Kovalevskaya Grant, administered by the ICM Local Organizing Committee.

Eligibility, Considerations, and Applications

Individuals at all career stages-graduate students, faculty, practitioners and researchers-are welcome to apply. We especially encourage applications from women, individuals from underrepresented groups, and those who may be attending an international meeting for the first time.

  • Applicants should have a full-time affiliation with an institution or organization in the United States at the time of the Congress, either enrolled as a student or employed.
  • To be considered "early-career", applicants should be at a career phase in the range from PhD graduate student to six years past completion of a doctorate at the time of the Congress. For an early career application to be complete, it must include a letter of recommendation from a senior professional mathematician (e.g., a graduate advisor, department chair, or collaborator) addressing your potential to benefit from or contribute to the ICM activities.
  • Our intention is to fund those who would not be able to participate in the Congress without the support of this program. Those without NSF, Simons, or other support available for ICM travel will receive priority in funding.
  • Those traveling between the US and the Russian Federation must pay close attention to visa requirements, travel restrictions in place at the time of the Congress, and guidance from the US Embassy and Consulates.
  • AMS employees are not eligible.

Awardees who expect costs to exceed the maximum amount and wish to request special consideration should contact AMS Programs staff as far in advance of the Congress as possible.
