The Co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Lisa Simonyi, Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), and Princeton University Department of Mathematics, Women and Mathematics (WAM) is an annual program that aims to recruit and retain more women in mathematics. WAM aims to counter the initial imbalance in the numbers of men and women entering mathematics training as well as the higher attrition rate of female mathematicians compared to their male counterparts at every critical transition stage in mathematical careers. WAM encourages female mathematicians to form collaborative research relationships and to become active in a vertical mentoring network spanning a continuum from undergraduates to emerita professors, which provides support and reduces the sense of isolation experienced by many women in mathematics. While there are a number of women's programs targeted solely at undergraduates, or graduate students, or postdocs, very few programs provide the depth and breadth that come from simultaneously including features tailored for undergraduate students, graduate students, and researchers from a broad spectrum of US institutions, all in one united community of scholars, as WAM does.

Please note due to the COVID pandemic the program may be hybrid or virtual depending on the restrictions in place in May 2022 in the state of New Jersey.

The IAS will require all visitors to provide proof of having completed a COVID-19 vaccination before on-campus access to offices, libraries, seminars, meetings, meals and other resources. If accepted to the program, further information will be sent by email on how to provide such proof.

There are three levels of participants:

  • undergraduate students at the junior and senior levels

  • graduate students at all levels

  • postdoctoral researchers and young faculty

Funding: (If accepted to the program your offer letter will detail funding dependent on the program being hybrid, virtual or on campus.)

  • Shared lodging in apartments on or near the IAS campus.

  • All meals

  • Reimbursement for travel

  • Childcare fund has been created to cover costs of dependent child care so participants with children can more easily attend the program.  More information can be found here:

Prerequisites:(for both courses)

Undergraduate knowledge of linear algebra and probability, as well as an introductory computer science course.

**Undergraduates and Beginner Graduates must submit a transcript.  Advanced graduates and postdocs do not have to submit a transcript.
