The Summer Undergraduate Applied Mathematics Institute (SUAMI) is an eight-week summer program for undergraduate students. The goals of the SUAMI are twofold: (1) to expose students to the nature, culture, and rigors of advanced work and research in the area of applied mathematics; (2) to give the students a taste of the graduate school experience to help them make a more informed decision on whether they should attend graduate school. The 2021 SUAMI will feature research projects in mathematical finance and discrete mathematics, and the collection of potential projects in discrete mathematics will include at least one option which is not motivated by applications. Previous coursework in math finance will not be necessary to participate in the math finance projects. We are particularly interested in including women and individuals from other underrepresented groups. Your application should include a statement (at most two pages in length) that explains why you are interested in participating in the SUAMI. Please include in this statement a description of any obstacles and/or challenges that you have faced and overcome in your pursuit of studying mathematics. Dates of the program: June 7 through July 30, 2021. While we are committed to running this program in the summer of 2021, the format has not yet been determined due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The program will run an in-person, remote-only, or hybrid format. The decision regarding the format will be made at a later date. There is a $3,500 stipend for participating students. Participants must reside in the United States during the program in order to receive this stipend. |
