program Description

Note: This application is only for women and gender-nonconforming individuals who plan to enter their first or second year in a PhD program in the US in Fall 2025.

The 2025 EDGE Summer Program will be held June 1 – June 28, 2025 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (pending funding). The EDGE Foundation will cover all travel, room, and board expenses related to the Summer Program. Program participants will also receive a modest stipend.

The EDGE Summer Program is a four-week, residential session designed to prepare a cohort of women and gender-nonconforming individuals to thrive in their PhD programs in the mathematical sciences. Program participants attend daily lectures in subjects such as Linear Algebra, Real Analysis, Measure Theory, and Applied Mathematics. EDGE coursework is designed to prepare participants for graduate research and qualification exams, while also providing practical experience in a rigorous academic setting. Participants delve deeper into these subjects through collaborative daily problem sessions with guidance from EDGE mentors, who are current graduate students and often EDGE alumnae.

The EDGE Summer Program is rigorous and immersive. Participants are expected to work on their coursework 7 days a week, often outside of regular working hours. The amount and level of work is demanding. EDGE encourages participants to communicate with co-directors so they can achieve the maximum benefit from the program.

Eligibility Applicants to the program should be women or gender-nonconforming individuals who: 1) are applying to PhD programs in the mathematical sciences with the intention of beginning in Fall 2025 or 2) just completed their first year in a PhD program in the mathematical sciences. Those from underrepresented minority groups are especially encouraged to apply.

Final acceptance to the program is contingent upon enrollment in a PhD program in Fall 2025.

To apply, please fill out the cover sheet, and submit the following:
  • A short (two to three paragraphs) personal statement describing your academic goals and the expected value of the EDGE Summer Program in achieving those goals. In this statement, describe your personal and professional experiences that will enhance and contribute to the diversity and interpersonal synergy of the EDGE community.
  • A current CV or resume.
  • An undergraduate transcript and, if applicable, a transcript of your graduate work. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
  • 2 letters of reference from people who can speak to your ability to succeed in graduate school. Your letter-writers will be emailed instructions on how to upload their letter to MathPrograms. Use the following sentences as a guide when emailing your letter-writers:
I am asking you to provide a brief letter of reference to support my application to The EDGE Program. The mission of this program is to strengthen the ability of women and gender-nonconforming individuals to successfully complete graduate programs in the mathematical sciences. The program would appreciate your candid opinion of me as a student, including in what capacity you have worked with me, my potential for success in a graduate program in the mathematical sciences, my ability to collaborate in a working environment, how the EDGE Summer Program might benefit me, and what I will contribute to the EDGE Summer Program. For more information about the Summer Program, please see www.edgeforwomen.org
