The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Michigan - Dearborn invites application for undergraduate research in applied mathematics in the summer of 2022 on the theme “Phase Retrieval with Applications to Optical Microscopy”. The project will incorporate elements of applied linear and matrix algebra, numerical analysis, and Fourier analysis, among others. The prerequisite for this project is a course in linear algebra. More details can be found here.

This eight-week program is scheduled from May 23rd to July 15th. This is a full time program and commitment for the complete 8 weeks is required. We plan to run a residential program with an initial remote week. We will start on Monday, May 23, virtually. We expect participants to arrive at Dearborn either on Tuesday, May 31, or Wednesday, June 1, for the residential part of the program that will end on Friday, July 15. Please note that we have to follow university and state guidelines; if we need to pivot to a completely virtual program due to pandemic restrictions, we will inform all the applicants and participants as soon as possible. We will also follow the University of Michigan - Dearborn protocols for COVID vaccination, testing, and masking.

Students will have a unique interaction with experienced faculty mentors in a productive intellectual environment, where they will learn how to use mathematical ideas to solve real-life problems. The program organizers will help students find appropriate venues to present and publish their results. Additionally, students will learn more about the graduate school application process and career opportunities in academia and industry.

Participants in this program will work alongside a cohort of fellow students from the UofM Dearborn REU Site in Mathematical Analysis and Applications. Those with interests in complex analysis, differential geometry, spectral theory, algebraic coding theory, number theory and mathematical music theory are referred to the separate application form at https://www.mathprograms.org/db/programs/1219 for a listing of projects and application details.

The program is open to all undergraduate students, regardless of major, who are US citizens or US permanent residents. Students from underrepresented groups in mathematics, women, and students from two-year college programs are especially encouraged to apply.

The deadline for applications is February 20th, although applications received after the deadline may still be considered.
