Program Description:

*** this program has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The AWM Research Symposium will take place June 16 - 19, 2022. Proposals submitted here will be considered.

The AWM Research Symposium will be held at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications in Minneapolis, MN, and will celebrate the 50th anniversary of AWM. The in-person symposium will showcase the research of women in the mathematical professions, featuring plenary talks, special sessions on a broad range of research in pure and applied mathematics, workshops, panels, and poster sessions for graduate students and recent PhDs.

AWM is now accepting proposals for panels or special sessions at the Research Symposium. A proposal should consist of: a title, summary of the session, and four proposed speakers (the organizer may be one of the speakers). The proposal will also request a statement about how your session supports AWM's commitment to diversity and inclusion. We welcome proposals from any member of the mathematical sciences community on topics in mathematical science research, education, culture, or professional development. If you wish to have a double-session, please indicate in the title Part I and Part II.

Please upload one pdf file and include the following:

1) Title:

2) Session/Panel Organizer: Include Name, Affiliation, Address, Phone, Email

3) Summary: Describe your session in no more than 1500 characters, including spaces. The summary should be written to attract those who specifically work on your topic as well as those who work in related areas. We suggest including the following information: • Explain the problem area to be addressed, its importance and applications. • Identify current directions of research and methods being developed to solve problems, including their advantages and shortcomings. • Describe the scope of your session.

4) Suggested Speakers: Provide the full name, affiliation, and address of each of the 4 suggested speakers and the intended content of their talk (provide title if you know it, but speakers do not need to be confirmed at this time). Presentation titles and abstracts will be required after sessions have been selected.

5) Commitment to Diversity:
The Association of Women in Mathematics (AWM) is committed to the full and equitable participation of a diverse community in its membership and at all activities. AWM supports the National Science Foundation's goals of expanding the diversity of individuals engaged in mathematical sciences through increased participation. The AWM embraces diversity through the inclusion of individuals across religion, age, race, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnicity, physical ability, marital status, body shape or size, gender identity and expression, socioeconomic status, employment status and other facets of diversity.

Please briefly explain how the session you propose supports AWM’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Examples may include (but are not limited to) whether your session includes a talk about equity in math education; or having a short discussion at the end of your session about why there are so few women in a specific field, and what we can do about it; or inviting a diverse group of speakers (on whatever axes are important); or a talk that honors the work of an overlooked researcher; or by having open discussions amongst the organizers, and by casting a wide net for submissions.
